The 2014 Cadillac ELR will have active noise cancelling, meaning the vehicle listens for noises and then creates an opposite sound wave from the speakers and sub woofer to cancel out the sound. Listening is done via 3 microphones mounted on the ceiling of the car.

Cadillac is introducing this feature to eliminate the noise emitted from the generator as it switches on and off in the various driving modes.

The ELR will be the first luxury car from GM to offer battery-powered driving at normal speeds. It will debut early next year and uses the same technology that's in the Chevy Volt.

Last year, the US government started investigating whether all EVs should emit an engine noise sound at all times so pedestrians can hear them whisk around corners. Of course, this is slightly different than cancelling out sound waves in the cabin. However, an outside noise wouldn't be an issue because any noise that did enter the cabin would be cancelled.
